So what’s the state of the UK Housing Market ?
We’ve been sharing news stories with our followers for 3mths today !
So what’s been happening in the UK Housing Market in last three months ?
Rents have been rising, largely due to there being a demand for rented accommodation that outstrips supply.
House prices continue to bounce along the bottom with some commentators suggesting there may be some further falls.
On the Social Housing front there are an estimated 1.8million people on a waiting list at present.
There are 827,000 UK Households in negative equity. The purchase of a home is a long term commitment of 25yrs and hopefully most will have taken the long view.
Negative equity is an issue for those that have to sell and it does restrict the ability to remortgage to a better mortgage deal.
Interest rates and mortgage rates are at an all time low.
We are told that are still 3million households that are in financial difficulty.
A lot of people are taking the opportunity presented by the low interest rates to pay down some of their mortgage.
Until the banks feel that property prices have bottomed out the levels of deposits required to purchase a home will not reduce.
67% of the UK population own their own home and we’re told that 77% still want to.
There are a number of innovative products out there for First Time Buyers such as Halifax product to assist the saving for a deposit, but we are told that only 14% of non home owners are actually saving for a deposit.
Due to the bailout and a large proportion of our banking sector is government owned/backed and there is a distinct lack of competition in the sector. Hopefully the selling off of Northern Rock may be a start to seeing some additional competition.
